Hotels Surprising Guests With Unexpected Fees
BOSTON (CBS) - First it was the airlines that starting adding additional fees.
Now hotels are following suit and many travelers are surprised when they get their bill.
Karen Gibson has noticed all kinds of charges on her bill, and she doesn't like it.
"I don't think it's fair sometimes because you're already paying pretty high fees for hotel rooms," she said.
WBZ-TV's Paula Ebben reports
Recently she has found fees for the safe in her hotel room, for the gym, and the fax machine.
A recent study found hotels are expected to pull close to $2 billion in extra fees this year. That's an increase of $100 million from last year.
Travel industry expert Ian Ford is finding people are mad about this situation.
He's heard of both luxury and two star hotels adding charges for restocking a mini bar, even when nothing was taken from it.
Other curious fees include of $8 for a bellman even though the person carried his own luggage; $3.95 as an energy surcharge for using the air conditioner; and $3.50 for using the in-room coffee machine.
The hotel industry says these charges reflect a more competitive business climate.
Joe McInerney of the American Hotel and Lodging Association added, "They're passing on a cost, whatever it is, and sometimes it is a little more expensive than the actual cost, but they have to cover some of their overhead."
Experts say to avoid fees, you can call the hotel directly and ask for a specific list of any and all additional charges before you make a reservation.
You might also find this information on the hotel website.
It's also good to ask about any breaks loyalty members are entitled to as well.
Finally, check your bill closely before you check out.
It's easier to challenge something if you're still at the hotel.
This isn't a trend Ian Ford expects to go away anytime soon.
"Hotels are charging fees for things that used to be free simply because they can. It's a new revenue stream and the consumer hasn't complained yet."
