'Hot Tub' Colvin On Toucher & Rich: Patriots Defense Not Aiming To Be Best In NFL
BOSTON (CBS) - Former Patriots linebacker Rosevelt Colvin joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Monday morning to break down Sunday's 59-24 Patriots win over the Colts.
Colvin, who did the segment from his hot tub, saw a very opportunistic Patriots defense on Sunday, returning two interceptions for touchdowns.
The defense still gave up big yards, allowing Andrew Luck to throw for 334 yards and surrendering 448 yards for the game. But Colvin says the goal of the Patriots defense isn't to be the best in the league, but to make enough plays to win each and every Sunday.
"For people frustrated with the defense, they have to understand who Bill is. He is a scheme, match-up coach. He isn't aiming to be the best defense in the league," Colvin said. "He's aiming to execute the game plan every weekend and win the ballgame. When he does that, he's fine. He's shuffling the cards, trying to figure out what hand is the best to play. Every weekend is a crap shoot for the fans to figure out if it's going to happen or not."

With the addition of Aqib Talib, the Patriots secondary was much more aggressive than they have been all season. They blitzed more, and in the end wound up with three interceptions -- two of which were returned for touchdowns.
"Bringing in Talib gives them two things; A playmaking corner -- a guy that they're confident can play a little man and a little zone. And they probably blitzed more than they have in the last 2-3 years yesterday, and that is the result of having confidence in guys on the back end."

"If they can develop some consistency then you'll see those unique, match-up blitzes and the opportunity for more big plays out of the defense," said Colvin.
