Pregnant Mom, 2 Kids Hurt In Crash On Route 85 In Hopkinton

HOPKINTON (CBS) -- Four people, including a pregnant woman, were injured when a car slammed into a group crossing a street Monday morning.

Police said that, around 10 a.m. Monday, two mothers and five children were crossing Hayden Rowe Street to go to nearby EMC Park.

One car, driven by a 61-year-old Hopedale woman, stopped for them as they were in the crosswalk.

But that car was rear-ended by another vehicle driven by a 32-year-old Milford man, which then struck one of the mothers, who is pregnant, and her two children.

A witness told WBZ-TV that the woman and a child in a stroller were sitting up near a telephone pole being treated before they were transported from the scene.

Hopkinton Police said the mother, a Hopkinton woman, was one of the people who called to report the crash, and that she said her son was bleeding from his head.

The mother and her two children were taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. The man who drove the car that rear-ended the lead car was also taken to a hospital.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reported that all were conscious when they were put into ambulances.

None of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening. Everyone is expected to be okay, but they are all very shaken up.

Neighbor Henry Seigal witnessed the crash.

"I heard the tires squealing, the crash, and then the screaming of the kids and the mothers."

Joe Neri said he heard the children screaming as he ran to give assistance.

"One of the mothers seemed like she got hit, also she was in shock," he said. "One of the children was still in the stroller with a head injury to the back of the head and to the side."

Neri said he used his shirt to apply pressure to the child's head.

On Monday afternoon, Chris Masters, the husband of the woman who was hit, spoke to reporters.

"It's terrifying," Masters said. "When I got the call, it was horrible."

He said one of the children struck was his 4-year-old son, Chase.

"He's very scared," said Masters. "He's quiet. Our son Chase, who's four and a half, got the brunt of it ... he has a scrape on his head, and scrapes down his body."

Hayden Rowe Street was closed between Chestnut and Grove Streets due to the crash, but was reopened around 1 p.m., police said.

Even though this street is clearly marked with warning and school signs, neighbors say people down this road way too fast.

"The people driving through here pay no regard to the speed limits, who's in the crosswalk," said Neri.

The crash is still under investigation, and it wasn't yet clear if charges would be filed.

"I think the message would be, pay attention," Masters said.
