Homemade Explosives Shown To Jurors In Marathon Bombing Trial

BOSTON (CBS) - It is a bomb the general public didn't know even existed until the Boston Marathon bombing trial reached this point. It is made out of a Rubbermaid plastic container and loaded with fuses and black powder. Jurors heard on Wednesday how investigators found the would-be explosive device in the back of the Mercedes SUV carjacked by the Tsarnaev brothers. But the duo never lit the fuse.

There were, however, other bombs that were lit during the night of the firefight with Watertown police. Two of them never went off; they are now evidence in the case against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Also Wednesday, a state police expert testified how after the firefight came to and end, they had to use a special robotic device to retrieve the devices - fearing the whole time they would detonate right there on Laurel street. Jurors saw how those pipe bombs were loaded with BBs, just like those at the marathon finish line.

Another state police expert who specializes in fingerprint identification told jurors how he was able to match Tamerlan and Dzhokhar's fingerprints not just to their own Green Honda Civic, but also all over the inside and outside of the carjacked Mercedes.

One of Dzhokhar's prints was even located on a magazine from the Ruger used in Cambridge and Watertown.

A DNA expert later testified that blood found on two white gloves inside the brothers' Honda matched the DNA profile of slain MIT police officer Sean Collier.
