Police Ask Public To Help Honor Hingham Marine During Escort
HINGHAM (CBS) -- Hingham Police are asking the public to help honor a local Marine missing and presumed dead after a helicopter crash in Hawaii.
When the family of Cpl. Christopher Orlando returns to Massachusetts Tuesday evening, State Police will escort them home from Logan Airport. Hingham Police will join them once the escort enters Hingham, and they are asking the public to stand along the route holding flags.
The family was in Hawaii for a memorial service for the twelve Marines involved in the accident held last Friday. They are scheduled to arrive at Logan Airport at 6:12 p.m.
Hingham Police said the route will head north on Main Street, continue on East Street, and end on Summer Street. They tweeted that the family is expected to arrive in Hingham around 7 p.m.
The Marines, who belonged to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, were killed when two military helicopters crashed off Hawaii during nighttime training exercises two weeks ago. The search began Jan. 14, and concluded last Friday when the Marines' status was changed to deceased.
Hingham Police are asking those along the route to stand in silence as a sign of respect, and to honor the family's continued requests for privacy.
They reminded people to park and stand off the road for their safety, and said that Hingham Veterans Services has hand-held flags available if needed.
