High Speed Police Chase Leads To Wilmington Man's 3rd OUI Charge
NORTH ANDOVER (CBS) - A Wilmington man is facing a long list of charges following a drunken high speed police chase, according to State Police.
Police had already been looking for a red Kia driven by Paul Tierney, 34, for earlier traffic violations, when around 2:30 a.m. a Middleton deputy sheriff spotted him parked in front of the Essex County Jail.
The deputy sheriff tried to stop and talk to Tierney, and wound up being struck by the car as Tierney allegedly tried to take off.
State Police and North Andover police both joined the chase, which reportedly reached speeds close to 90 mph.
Officers eventually managed to flatten Tierney's tires by deploying spikes. From there, Tierney took off running, but an Andover officer managed to chase him down.
Once in custody, police say he failed a sobriety test.
Tierney is charged with failure to stop for police, OUI Liquor, 3rd Offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating after revocation, habitual traffic offender, resisting arrest, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, speeding, marked lanes violation, failure to stop, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a public employee, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and trespass on state/county property.
