100+ MPH Chase Ends When Driver Rolls SUV At Bourne Rotary
BOURNE (CBS) - A high-speed chase ended in dramatic fashion Thursday as the driver police were chasing flipped over a stolen SUV at the Bourne Bridge rotary.
Police say 24-year-old Nicholas Marshall of Johnston, RI had warrants out for stealing cars in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He was also wanted in Pennsylvania.
Around 5 p.m., police officers spotted him driving a Volkswagen Touareg on 495, shortly after it was reported stolen in Mansfield.
Officers also had information that Marshall had a loaded shotgun with him in the vehicle.
According to State Police, officers chased the vehicle for nearly a half-hour, with speeds topping out over 100-miles-per-hour.
During the pursuit, State Police say they considered a number of safety factors, including traffic conditions, while deciding whether continuing the chase was appropriate.
Officers pursued the car, eventually throwing out stop sticks to slow the thief down.
The stop sticks shredded two tires, but the driver kept going.
It all ended just over the Bourne Bridge when Marshall flipped his car at the rotary.
He was taken to the hospital, but was not seriously hurt.
Police say they did not recover the shotgun that they suspected Marshall had with him.
Marshall is expected to face a number of charges related to the stolen car and the pursuit.
