'Hero' Boston Police Officer Recognized For Frigid Water Rescue
BOSTON (CBS) - Police officer Ed Norton was commended for his heroic actions after he jumped into Fort Point Channel in Boston to rescue a woman who was in the water.

Monday, Norton was presented with a commendation from the department.
"It really is a remarkable show of heroism, immediate action, and courage that has made a difference this Christmas for a family," Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said. "The truth of the matter is, she was in trouble and she might not have survived if he hadn't taken that immediate action."
At about 12:44 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a call about a woman in the water. The officer saw the victim struggling in the water and jumped in to save her.
"I was the first police officer to see where she was, and there was no time to think, really. It was either go or watch her struggling. So I certainly can't stand on the side and watch her drown. It's as simple as that," Norton said.
"I feel like I did what I was capable of doing at the time and needed to be done."
According to witnesses, the victim may have jumped or fallen into the water and was screaming for help.
Additionally, two Boston Firefighters jumped in to assist.
The officer and woman suffered from hypothermia and were taken to Mass. General for treatment.
The Boston firefighters, also suffering from hypothermia, were transported to the Tufts Medical Center for treatment.
