Heat & Humidity Remain for Now...But Signs of Change
We are quickly warming this morning from the 70's into the 80's. Buy midday, some areas will be approaching 90. Sunshine in place this morning will fade this afternoon under thickening clouds in advance of a prefrontal trough which is triggering a few scattered showers/storms in western/central NY. The increasing clouds will help to slow the warming. Hazy sunshine should last at our eastern facing beaches into the early afternoon before turning mostly cloudy. Dewpoints have been rising into the mid 60's and will likely climb to near 70 before the day is through so a typical muggy summer day in July with highs in the upper 80's and lwr 90's.
The best support for any stronger storm of heavy downpours looks like will remain in western New England. While severe weather is likely, slow moving storms of showers could produce locally heavy rainfall. Showers and storms will be pushing into the CT valley by mid afternoon. The best chance of showers or storms in the west will be from 2-6 PM. These will be pushing eastward in a weakened state without the energy from the sun from 6-10 Pm in eastern MA with the potential for a brief downpour. The Cape & islands & SE MA do not appear to get much rain from the frontal passage at all unfortunately. We are all hoping to get some beneficial rainfall out of this. July so far has only delivered about a tenth of an inch of rain. Some of these downpours today could deposit 1/4-1/2" if we are lucky
The front is off the coast Monday with increasing hazy sunshine and more heat and humidity. A brief pop up shower may be triggered in the afternoon. Highs will be in the Lwr 90's. Heat will build into Tuesday with weak high pressure and west winds with high in the Lwr-mid 90's. Finally, as promised a cold front will be pushing through Wednesday to break the heat wave with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Canadian High pressure will push in over the Northeast thanks to an upper level trough strengthening over the Canadian maritimes. This will direct cooler and more comfortable air for the end of the week with highs falling back into the lwr 80's for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Absolutely Stellar Weather to start off the weekend of the 21st.
More signs of a slight trough around the northeast for the rest of the month which should go a long way in keeping the worst of the summer heat and humidity away for a while. August could bring more welcome news of a reprieve from the heat..but let's not get ahead of ourselves. 4 more days of uncomfortable heat and humidity. We can do this!
