Man Killed In Haverhill Hit And Run Identified
HAVERHILL (CBS) -- A 59-year-old man who was hit by a car in Haverhill Friday morning has died, police said. The crash occurred around 5:15 a.m. near the Water and Main Street intersection.
The victim was identified as Charles Burrill, of Haverhill, according to the Essex County District Attorney. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Evidently someone hit him, took off, and just left him there," said Burrill's brother-in-law Joseph Mack.
Burrill was on his way to catch a bus for work. He was a custodian at Anna Jaques Hospital.
"If it was an accident fine, stop, pull over maybe do something," Mack said.
Police said they were looking for a silver or gray PT Cruiser that left the scene. The car likely has substantial front end damage. A car matching that description was towed to the police station late Friday afternoon. The owner of the car is being questioned.
"To see my wife like this and the person not stopping," Mack said. "Better hope I don't get my hands on him."
Based on surveillance camera footage, police believe it continued northbound then went east.
"Any decent human being would have stayed with the person and called 911. That is just absolutely -- I feel horrible," said Jennifer Ratcliff.
One woman told WBZ-TV she uses that crosswalk every morning to get to the gym. "I'm very nervous now, I don't know what do to now," she said.
She also believes a change in the traffic lights has made it harder for people to use the crosswalk. "I wait until it says 'cross,' and when I'm crossing, the cars are going around me."
