Hole In Haverhill Bridge Snarls Traffic On I-495

HAVERHILL (CBS) – Traffic in Haverhill was snarled for several hours after concrete came loose in the center lane of a bridge on Interstate 495.

The crumbling concrete exposed a 6-inch area of steel reinforcement bars on the bridge, which is above the Merrimack River in the area of Exit 49.

Crews began working in the area Friday morning and only one lane of traffic was getting by on the southbound side of I-495.

An area of concrete was removed from the bridge and new concrete was poured near the expansion joint.

All lanes were reopened by 4:50 p.m.
