Harvard Hosts Paralympic Experience
Harvard University played host to an event Sunday aimed at introducing mobility impaired kids to paralympic sports.
The event, called the Paralympic Experience, gave kids the opportunity to try out seven different paralympic sports including wheelchair basketball, track and field, and sled hockey.
Joe Walsh, who spearheaded the event, said the goal is to increase participation by disabled people in sports and physical activity.
"Take one's first steps running, when several months ago maybe you didn't even think you'd be able to walk," Walsh said.
The event drew smiles from many, ranging from those trying out sports for the first time to those who are experienced.
"For the first time I was able to participate on a team and contribute in a meaningful, non-trivial way," Andrew Johnson, a blind rower from Connecticut, said.
Johnson is on a community rowing team in his hometown.
"I feel like I am part of something that's bigger than myself," Johnson said.
