Harvard Appoints Acting Minister
CAMBRIDGE (AP) - Harvard University has appointed Wendel Meyer as acting minister of Memorial Church on campus, replacing the late Peter Gomes.
Meyer served as associate minister of Memorial Church from 1997 to 1999 before spending a decade as rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Beverly. He returned to Harvard in December as associate minister for administration.
Meyer will assume the full range of responsibilities involved in leading the center of Christian life on campus during the search for a permanent successor to Gomes, who died Feb. 28.
Meyer says the assignment is a small way to honor Gomes, a "cherished friend and mentor."
A memorial service celebrating the life and ministry of the Gomes is scheduled for April 6 at the church.
