Halloween Trick-Or-Treating Forecast: Cold

BOSTON (CBS) - We always discuss the chances of a white Christmas as the holiday draws closer, chances are typically about 25-percent in Boston and more than 50-percent in the northwest suburbs.

We don't keep statistics on the chances of a "White Halloween" simply because it has never happened!

But many trick or treaters (away from the coastline) will experience their first "White Halloween" tonight!

Shovel out the pumpkins and lay down the ice melt, this Halloween is going to be a lot different than most.

In fact, over the last several years, the weather has been downright balmy for Halloween.

In the last 10 years, the high temperature on October 31st has been above 50 degrees 9 times, 60+ 7 times and 70+ 3 times!

When you consider the average high for the date is 57 degrees I would say we have had a lot more treats than tricks lately!

Not to mention, we have had no significant precipitation on Halloween in the last 10 years, so it seems like we were overdue for a "trick."

Looking even farther back, we have really only had two poor weather days in the last 20 years.  Ssome rain fell in 1993 and again in 2000.

Of course, many native New Englanders will remember our last REAL bad Halloween, 20 years ago on this date - The Perfect Storm, a Halloween Nor'easter that we will never forget.

TONIGHT'S FORECAST

As for tonight, for those towns which have not postponed their trick or treating, at least there will not be any precipitation to deal with.

The main issue this evening (besides traversing through the snow) will be the cold.

Temperatures will peak this afternoon around 2 p.m. at about 50 degrees in Boston and in the 40's in most of the suburbs.

With the setting sun at 5:39 p.m. the temperatures will begin to drop fairly quickly.

By 6 p.m. Boston should be around 45 degrees and the 'burbs around 40.

By 8 p.m., when most trick or treaters are heading home, Boston will be around 40 and dropping, while many suburban locations will already be in the mid 30's.

In fact, in many valley locations and towns well north and west, temperatures will dip to near or below freezing by the time the kids are back home counting their loot.

Watch Melissa Mack's forecast:

Parents and kids should be extra careful on sidewalks, decks and walkways as there will be many icy spots.

So take it slow, wear your long john's under the suit and have a safe Halloween!
