Halifax Firefighter Killed In Plympton Crash
PLYMPTON (CBS) - A Halifax firefighter was killed in a head-on collision with another driver Friday afternoon in Plympton.
Emergency crews were called to Main Street just north of the Carver town line at 2:24 p.m. Plympton police and fire, as well as Massachusetts State Police's Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene.
Police say the driver of a truck heading northbound drifted into the oncoming traffic lane, colliding with a truck traveling southbound.
Halifax fire officials told WBZ Friday night that the southbound driver, Bruce Wood, a 43-year veteran of the department, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wood was an active firefighter who also served as the fire department's chaplain, according to the Halifax Fire Department Facebook page.
"A nicer man you would not meet," reads the post. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
The northbound driver was seriously hurt and taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.
Police have not yet released the identity of the injured driver.
The accident remains under investigation.
WBZ-TV's Katie Brace reports that flags at the fire station are at half-staff.
The department is made up of about eight full-time and 30 volunteer firefighters.
Firefighters from a neighboring community will be oversee the Halifax station.
Wood's 21-year-old son died six years ago in a motorcycle accident.
