Gresh & Zo's 2014 NFL Summer School: Washington Redskins
BOSTON (CBS) - It's not your typical classroom. They're not your typical teachers. It's where you go after failing all year. It's Gresh and Zo's NFL Summer School on 98.5 The Sports Hub!
The summer school tour rolls on and heads to the nation's capital, where Andy Gresh and Mike Flynn break down and preview the upcoming 2014 season for the Washington Redskins.
Taking Attendance:
The Redskins fired Mike Shanahan and hired Jay Gruden as their new head coach. They lost inside linebacker London Fletcher to retirement and signed wide receiver Desean Jackson, defensive tackle Jason Hatcher and safety Ryan Clark in free agency. They also re-signed the "Big Bang Clock" Brandon Meriweather.
Gresh: "For me it's not so much who they drafted and who they got in free agency, it's can Jay Gruden walk in and establish a baseline level of performance for the people already there, so they can see who's good and who isn't? Then after that you start to purge and make big moves. I think their draft class was more impressive than their free agency."
Flynn: "Under Shanahan they kind of crumbled. When your head coach and quarterback don't get along you need a change. That, to me, was the biggest addition in Jay Gruden. Head coach always trumps players."
Pop Quiz:
Robert Griffin III had a great rookie season in 2012 and followed it up with a down year in 2013. What are your expectations for RG3 in 2014?
Gresh: "Jay Gruden is going to have to adapt his offense a little bit. Can Robert Griffin III embrace going through reads and be patient enough to throw short-to-immediate routes, and not want to go for the home run every time? I think early the transition will go okay. But Week 5 and on let's see how he plays."
Flynn: "I think he got a little bit exposed last year -- probably health-wise because he couldn't run around like he used to. The accuracy has to be better. I think he's healthy and I think he gets the noose from Mike Shanahan out from under him. I think he's going to produce a lot more than last year, that's for sure."
Fantasy 101:
How will running back Alfred Morris be affected switching from the Mike Shanahan offense to Jay Gruden's?
Gresh: "I think Alfred Morris has the chance to be a no.1, definitely a no. 2 back in fantasy. I think at his core Jay Gruden wants to stick with a guy and ride him. Roy Helu? I don't know what the Helu he is. He had some success under Shanahan but it was fleeting. I think Alfred Morris can be a 1,100 yard back under Jay Gruden because I know he's going to run the ball."
Flynn: "They're gonna have to give him the ball to protect RG3 a little bit, so he'll put up some big numbers."
You can draft one Redskins wide receiver: Desean Jackson or Pierre Garcon. Who do you take?
Gresh: "I gotta go with Desean Jackson because I just think he's going to make big plays."
Flynn: "I got Garcon. Desean Jackson is talented, but he seems to be like a boom-or-bust kind of guy."
Final Grade:
Last year the Redskins went 3-13. Year before that? 10-6. Vegas has set the over/under at 7.5 wins. Where do they finish and do they make the playoffs?
Gresh: "Looking at their schedule they're not winning 7 games. I'm going under."
Flynn: "I have the under and they won't make the playoffs."
