Gresh & Zo's 2014 NFL Summer School: Carolina Panthers
BOSTON (CBS) - It's not your typical classroom. They're not your typical teachers. It's where you go after failing all year. It's Gresh and Zo's NFL Summer School on 98.5 The Sports Hub!
The summer school tour rolls on and heads to Charlotte, where Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak break down and preview the upcoming 2014 season for the Carolina Panthers.
Taking Attendance:
Wide receiver Brandon LaFell and Steve Smith are gone, but the Panthers did bring in Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant and Tiquan Underwood. They also drafted Florida State WR Kelvin Benjamin in the first round to fill out the receiving core. Longtime left tackle Jordan Gross called it a career and retired.
Gresh: "I think they are a team evolving. They have to pay their quarterback. Eventually Cam Newton is going to get a massive pay day, so you've got to start to trim your roster and plan a little differently. I do think there is a little bit of that going on there."
Zo: "I look at them defensively and that's what's going to keep them in games. It's going to be up to Cam Newton to make a play at the end."
Pop Quiz:
Will the Panthers be able to throw the ball this year? They lost so many weapons on that side of the ball.
Zo: "Jerricho Cotchery as your no. 1 is a tough thing.
Fantasy 101:
This is a yearly question. Do you take DeAngelo Williams or Jonathan Stewart?
Gresh: "Oh boy. I lean more towards DeAngelo Williams. The problem is they both get hurt every year, but I'll say DeAngelo because I think he gets injured less.
Zo: "I'm with him. I trust DeAngelo to stay on the field and get in the end zone more, so take him."
Are there any Panthers wide receivers worth drafting?
Gresh: "I'd stay away. I just don't believe in the process of what they're going through right now. Long term, Kelvin Benjamin is the guy that you want. If you take him late and you're in a keeper league you may have an interesting decision based on what happens this year. That size jumps off the page and he's a pretty athletic dude."
Final Grade:
Last year's team was 12-4. Year before that? 7-9. Vegas has set the over/under at 8.5 wins. Where do they finish and do they make the playoffs?
Zo: "Hit me. They're going over at 9-7, but they do not make the playoffs."
Gresh: "I agree with Zo. 9-7 and they miss the playoffs. It'll be enough for Ron Rivera to keep his job, but maybe put him on the hot seat."
