Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak's summer school tour begins in Orchard Park, where the guys educate us all and preview the 2014 season for the Buffalo Bills.
Taking attendance:
The Bills traded away their first round picks in 2014 and 2015 in order to draft Clemson wideout Sammy Watkins. They also traded for wide receiver Mike Williams from Tampa Bay and traded away Stevie Johnson. Running back Bryce Brown also came to Buffalo via trade from Philly. Brandon Spikes and coach Pepper Johnson also call themselves Bills now after spending time in New England. Linebacker Kiko Alonso is out for the year with a torn ACL.
Gresh: "Offensively they can be scary because they can put on the field one of the few things NFL teams have across the board and that is speed. Between Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, C.J. Spiller you're talking about guys who can really run. And you also have a quarterback in E.J. Manuel that's big and can move. The first thing you've got to do is slow them down because they can run."
Zolak: "You've heard me talk about E.J. Manuel and he was one guy I didn't rip last year. He can make all the throws. I was pretty impressed by him. Scott Chandler is the type of tight end that can give the Patriots safeties problems. Pre-Revis and pre-Browner I'm a little nervous reading this type of lineup. But I think the Patriots should be able to match up with these guys."
Pop Quiz:
Hardy then asked Gresh and Zo to argue whether the Doug Marrone/E.J. Manuel combination is an actual thing, like Belichick/Brady is.
Zolak Arguing For: "You're E.J. Manuel. You get drafted by the Buffalo Bills no. 1. You come in and Marrone is your first NFL head coach. He's all that you know. This is like Andrew Luck coming into the league with Chuck Pagano. From day one all you know is Buffalo, Buffalo, Buffalo. He's the head guy that I answer to and he's all that exists."
Gresh Arguing Against: "Their offensive line is not good enough for them to play the style they want to play, which is to be spread out and a little more uptempo."
Fantasy 101:
- Stud: "C.J. Spiller. Running back. He's going to find ways to get into the endzone, whether on a third-and-one, or out of the backfield on a couple of screen passes. Maybe they'll split him out and throw him the football," said Zolak.
- Sleeper: "They have a lot of guys that can be studs and Sammy Watkins is one of them," said Gresh. "But I'm gonna go a little off the board here. I'm gonna go with tight end Tony Moeaki. I don't know if their offensive line is going to be good enough to run the ball inside the 10, so I'm gonna take advantage of my quarterback's legs, run play action and have two tight ends on the field. Maybe he gets you five or six cheap-o touchdowns."
Final Grade:
Last year's team? 6-10. Year before that? 6-10. The Vegas over/under on the Buffalo Bills is 6.5. Where do they finish, and do they make the playoffs?
Gresh: "No they don't make the playoffs because that is a rhetorical question. I'm going with the under. It's at 6.5 and I think they're good for 6. I'm taking 6. They suck and they're not going to be able to get out of their own way."
Zolak: "You know me guys. I so wanna go 'hit me!' But it's such a high number at 6.5 so I'm going to go under. They're consistent . . . consistently 6-10."
