Gresh & Zo: Patriots Continue To Forge Their Identity
BOSTON (CBS) - Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak recapped the Patriots overtime win over the Denver Broncos to open their show Monday morning.
The hometown team displayed tremendous depth and resiliency in coming from behind to beat the AFC favorites, a game in which the Patriots overcame a 24-point deficit en route to a 34-31 victory on Sunday Night Football at Gillette Stadium.
Scott Zolak pointed to the character of this team as the main reason why they're standing here today at 8-3.
"This is a resilient bunch right here. There's something to be said for team chemistry, you can't refute that in sports," said Zolak. "Identity is being formed here on this football team."
Aside from the come-from-behind dramatics of the game, what Andy Gresh found most impressive about the win was the contributions from the offense, defense and special teams.
Offensively, Tom Brady led the Patriots to five straight scoring drives to open the second half.
Defensively, a unit without Jerod Mayo, Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly held the high-powered Denver offense to just seven second half points - not to mention players like Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard and Brandon Spikes all playing through injuries.
And on special teams, a botched punt return attempt by the Broncos led to a Nate Ebner recovery and a Stephen Gostkowski game-winning kick.
"We're back to them winning as a team. It's not just defense, or just offense. They're back to all three phases of the game, finding ways to contribute week in and week out to victories," said Gresh.
"I look at this group, and they're not perfect. They're not great at any one thing, but they're pretty good across the board to where your weakness can be exposed. Your big mistake will be exposed against the Patriots. From top to bottom, it was that proverbial team win."
"1-45 [game day roster] they're all ready to go," said Gresh.
