Gresh & Zo On Stopping Stafford, Megatron
BOSTON (CBS) - After a glorious win last weekend over the Indianapolis Colts, the 8-2 New England Patriots play host Sunday afternoon to the 7-3, NFC North-leading Detroit Lions.
The Lions defense is a formidable unit ranked at the top of the league in every category, but with a young quarterback in Matt Stafford and planet player in wide receiver Calvin Johnson, the Detroit offense can also pose some problems.
98.5 The Sports Hub's Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak spent part of Friday's show giving their take on Stafford and Megatron, and how they think this game will play out.
Stafford's arm is one thing that jumps out to you. The former no. 1 overall pick threw for 5,000 yards in 2011 and was just 33 yards short of reaching that mark again the following year.
"Despite the numbers he has put up none have been against big competition. He hasn't had a quality win," Zolak said of Stafford. "The man can throw one hell of a ball. He has a strong arm, but it gets him in trouble. Also, what would he be without Megatron?"
Gresh completely agrees with Zo when it comes to Stafford and his lack of big wins, pointing to drastic numbers one doesn't expect from an elite quarterback.
"Stafford has never won on the road versus a team that finished with a winning record. He's 0-15," stated Gresh.
While talented, Gresh said the Lions are "their own worst enemy" and that even with a change at head coach they remain dysfunctional and on the verge of self destruction.
Meanwhile, wide receiver Calvin Johnson (ankle) has missed three games so far this season to injury. Having Johnson in the lineup does give the Lions one of their key components to winning back, but Gresh wonders if he's flawed as well.
"Johnson is a great player, but is he a winning player? Does he fit in a winning team or is he a stat compiler on a bad team?" asked Gresh.
"I don't know, that's a good question," responded Zo.
With the stage set next weekend for a road showdown in Green Bay at Lambeau Field, Gresh and Zolak also can't help but wonder if Patriots fans (and maybe even the team) are looking past the Lions, and if this is your textbook definition of "a trap game."
