Gresh & Zo: Derek Jeter, Tom Brady One In The Same
BOSTON (CBS) - In terms of modern greatness in sports you can't have the discussion without starting with Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
Jeter, the 13-time All Star, has appeared in seven World Series and has five rings to show for it.
Tom Brady, the 2-time NFL MVP, has appeared in five Super Bowls and has three rings to show for it.
Both players operate under the bright lights of a big city. Both players consistently come through in the clutch.
With Derek Jeter announcing his retirement yesterday at the conclusion of the 2014 season it's only appropriate to give him a retrospective, and what better way to do it than compare the New York sports legend with a Boston sports legend.
Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak discussed the two future Hall of Famers Thursday morning.
"Derek Jeter, to me, is the old school baseball player that you used to revere and romanticize about," said Gresh. "Derek Jeter takes me back to a day when baseball players had an aura. When Reggie Jackson walked into a room in the 1970's the dude had a glow about him. If you think of baseball players in the 50's and 60's, and the aura and the mystique around them, Derek Jeter is a throwback to those guys."
"Jeter has never gone over the line. Jeter is pretty much Tom Brady in the press conferences," said Zolak.
Gresh, "I think Jeter and Tom Brady are very, very similar."
"I've heard the Jeter/Manning comparisons and it's not even close," said Zo.
"Derek Jeter is more than just a baseball player. In many ways he is the quintessential American athlete," said Gresh. "He transcends baseball. This, to me, is one of those guys who you put under 'American Sportsman' and he just happened to be a baseball player. You really have to appreciate this guy for the way he went about his business."
