Grand Finale to Memorial Day Weekend
The past three days have been quite a ride. We have seen a soaking rain give all our lawns and gardens the drink of water they have been thirsting for. The 2-4" of rain in western New England will help to make the drought a forgotten memory. This storm brought in some of the coldest air we have seen this late in the season since about 1967, when we had a similar cold airmass with temps in the mid 40's. And of course Snow in the mountains of VT and NH....not exactly the kind of weather you dream about for Memorial Day weekend.
Clouds remain today, but the rain is gone and that is making a huge difference. The low is currently hugging the coast of Maine and slowly lifting away. Abundant cloud cover remains in place with the effects of the Upper Low over us. Gusty WNW are wrapping into the back side of the low with gusts over 30 mph from time to time. Dry air is moving in on the back side too, so breaks of sun have been out there helping to lift spirits. Grab it while you can, because the instability remains in the atmosphere. Any sun will fade as the warmer rising air off the ground into the cooler air aloft will help to form building cumulus clouds. Clouds with the cool blustery winds will help to keep temps cool in the 50's near 60 through the afternoon.
Skies will start off cloudy tonight, but clearing skies will settle in with building high pressure sliding from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic by Memorial Day. Another cool night an be expected with lows in the 30's in the burbs and Lwr 40's downtown. Breezy winds should prevent any frost forming. Bright sunshine Monday with give way to partly sunny skies by afternoon with popping fair weather clouds during the afternoon. Temps will respond to the sun and west winds by climbing into the upper 60's and lwr 70's as early as midday. A wonderful end to this weekend! A perfect day for going to a parade to honor all the brave soldiers we have lost, then celebrate our freedom with a cookout!
The sunshine will hold right through Tuesday. High pressure will pull of the coast with warmer SW winds which will bring temps well into the 70's nearing 80. A warm front will approach Wednesday with a few showers or a brief thunderstorm. Once this front pushes through a huge upper level ridge shifts eastward and temps will sky rocket into the mid-upper 80 for the end of the week with increasing humidity. Each day with a risk of a PM T'storm. After a weekend where we have turned on the heat...by next weekend we will be turning on the AC's. How quickly things can change here. While the unofficial start to summer has been temporarily delayed...it will arrive in force by the end of the week. Time to tuck this weekend into bed, and break out the summer weather gear!
