Young Grafton Girl Leads Police To Murdered Mother, Wounded Father

GRAFTON (CBS) – Police were alerted to a murder inside a Grafton home after a 5-year-old girl was found wandering in the street in her pajamas.

Grafton Police responded to a Worcester Street home around 6 a.m. Wednesday and found Kelly Sugarman, the girl's 36-year-old mother, dead inside.

In addition, Michael Sugarman, the child's father, was on the floor with a knife sticking out of his neck.

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early said Michael Sugarman, who remains hospitalized, is expected to be charged with murder.

Early said that while it is early in the investigation, it appears the man's knife wounds may have been self-inflicted.

When police found the girl wandering in the street, she told officers "Mommy is sleeping, mommy is sick," Early said.

After being transported to an area hospital, the girl was released to the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

A neighbor said the couple had only recently moved to the neighborhood.

"They were quiet, they kept to themselves. They never said 'hi.' They're new neighbors. You just never know," said the man, who did not want to be identified.

Early said police want to assure the community that there is no danger to the public and the incident was not random.
