GQ Includes Bill Belichick, Bobby Valentine In 12 Worst Coaches In Sports
BOSTON (CBS) -- GQ created a list of 12 "Coaches Gone Wild," and a couple of local leaders of sports teams made the not-so-flattering list.
Three-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick made the list, under the category "Human Monsters," while first-year Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was included under the "'I' in 'Team'-ers" category.
Authors Jeff Johnson and David Roth wrote that it was not a difficult decision to include Belichick, but it was indeed hard trying to figure out which category in which he should be included.
"Actually, we could put this scowling, blond-TV-host-wooing, illegallyvideotaping- his-opponents control freak and future Hall of Famer in most categories on this list," they said.
Belichick's company in the "Human Monsters" category is former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who was included because of his bounty program that encouraged players to "kill the head."
Valentine, meanwhile, made the list for stealing the spotlight from his players.
"[Valentine] loves to cast doubts about the talent/physical and emotional preparedness of his own roster/all of Western civilization. With a smirk. To any news outlet large or small," the story said.
Valentine's company in the "'I' in 'Team'-ers" category is Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, who was included for his questionable tactics that have resulted in two Final Four trips being vacated.
"What we're talking about is hubris in something close to its precise classical sense," the story said. "Coaches, operating in a system that values absolute power, have, perhaps reasonably, come to believe that that power extends just as absolutely outside the locker room. Thus their Olympian puzzlement when upbraided for behavior that would give presidents and billionaires pause. It's enough to make you pity the poor athletes who work for them."
