Melting Snow Leaks Into Government Center MBTA Station

BOSTON (CBS) – The newly renovated $90 million Government Center MBTA station is leaking.

The MBTA says snow melting above ground at a site where sidewalks and street lights are being installed trickled down to the ceiling area over the Blue Line platform.

Train service is not being affected, but there are buckets on the platform to collect the water.

"Waterproofing sealant material will be installed as the project engineer continues to evaluate the situation," MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola said in a statement.

"It is believed this issue occurred because soil was exposed and construction activity was occurring above ground. The MBTA will continue to monitor and mitigate the situation."

DePaola said they made need to use waterproofing sealant "on rare occasions in the future because Government Center's 100 year old main tunnel walls and roofs are still in place."

The station officially re-opened March 21 after a two-year remodeling project.
