Gov. Patrick Recognizes Local Leaders For Black History Month
BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick's administration is marking the Black History Month by celebrating the contribution of African-American leaders working within the administration.
Patrick's administration has released a video featuring testimonial from Patrick, Maj. Gen. Joseph Carter of the Massachusetts National Guard, Undersecretary for Criminal Justice Sandra McCroom, the governor's Chief of Staff William "Mo" Cowan and others.
On Thursday, Patrick and Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray are scheduled to salute the pillars of the Massachusetts senior community in Brockton.

The black historian Carter Woodson founded Negro History Week in 1926, seeking to build self-worth in an oppressed people, preserve a marginalized subject, and prove to an America steeped in racism that children of Africa played a crucial role in modern civilization.

Woodson chose February because it contained the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
