Goucher With Adam Jones: Bruins Use Game 2 Formula For Success In Game 3

BOSTON (CBS) - The Red Wings played pool, and the Bruins played hockey en route to a 3-0 shutout victory Tuesday night in Game 3 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. With the win, the Bruins took the 2-1 series lead prior to a pivotal Game 4 Thursday night.

98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones was on the air following the win and talked to Dave Goucher and Bob Beers of the Bruins Radio Network for a postgame recap.

As was the case in Game 2, the B's came out the chute ready to play and simply dominated the first period, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

"They were on the attack from the drop of the puck -- literally from the drop of the puck -- and they never really let up in that first period. They wore Detroit down and forced the issue up front," said Goucher.

Bad decisions by Detroit and the ability of the Bruins to capitalize proved to be the difference.

"As we noted during the game, some horrendous turnovers by the Red Wings. Two bad line changes ended up costing Detroit those first two goals, and the Bruins were really able to take advantage of that to their credit.

"That's back-to-back games now where they've been great in the first period and have been able to ride that from there. From their standpoint, that's a great recipe for success," said Goucher.

Not only were the Bruins capitalizing on offense, but their stifling defense is really giving the Red Wings fits according to Bob Beers.

"As good as the young kids from Detroit have been this season, they're running up against a good defensive team with a lot of layers that make it hard on you to do things. The attention to detail by the Bruins from a defensive standpoint, from a team defensive standpoint, the Bruins have been rock solid.

"They have not given Detroit a lot of space to utilize some of that skill and speed that they have," said Beers.

Bruins-Red Wings Game 3 Recap

After speaking with Dave and Bob, Adam Jones provided his three highlights and lowlights from the game in a segment we call "Plus/Minus."

Plus

- Dougie Hamilton: "I've questioned Dougie Hamilton at times, but tonight he was a force in the opening period, including his highlight reel goal. ... Hamilton registered four total shots in that first period, one rang the post and the other went wide. You could make the case he could've had a hat trick. He was an obvious plus for the Bruins."

- Jordan Caron: "It was the first career playoff goal for Caron, hopping on the rebound from Shawn Thornton and it gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead at that time. I questioned their depth coming into this series, but it has been on full display so far -- and Caron was another example of that tonight."

- Tuukka Rask: "23 saves for Rask, not tested a ton but he did have some highlight reel saves. That's now the fourth career playoff shutout for Tuukka Rask in his last eight postseason wins."

Minus

- Justin Florek: "Florek set the tone in Game 2 getting the Bruins on the board early, but in Game 3 he took a bad, bad too many men on the ice penalty -- fortunately they were able to kill it off."

- Sluggish Second Period: "For the second game in a row they took their foot off the gas. It was even in shots 12-12 and the Red Wings had some opportunities to make it a one-goal game -- they didn't, but I thought they eased up in that second period."

- Brad Marchand: "Marchand said earlier in the series that Brendan Smith is not a fan of his, and tonight he tripped Marchand, but Marchand really, really embellished. He goes down, gets hit on his left knee and grabs his right knee. The penalty would have been called either way, but you just hope he eradicates that from his game."
