Goucher On Toucher & Rich: What Does The Proposed NHL Deal Mean?
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly, met with NHLPA director Donald Fehr on Tuesday in New York. According to Bettman, the NHL proposed a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue, as well as an 82-game season that would begin Nov. 2.
98.5 The Sports Hub's Bruins play-by-play announcer Dave Goucher joined Toucher & Rich to discuss the reality of what this all could mean.
How close are we to getting an actual season?
"The big part of it is, is this a starting point or is this something the player's association is just going to tweak a little bit and sometime next week they wrap this up? Now if the players look at this as a starting point, I still think there's a little ways to go," said Goucher.
Bettman has said that there are about nine or ten days for the sides to work this deal out to have the season start by the proposed November 2nd date.
Is this date too soon to start playing games? How will they fit in the games that they missed?
"These first three weeks of games that they would miss, they would tack them on to the end of the regular season schedule… They would have the regular season go to the end of April, and the Stanley Cup Finals the end of June, in theory," said Gouch. "It's a heck of a move from the owners standpoint, because they have taking a beating the last few months, and now all the pressure is on the players. "
