Got Milk? Home Delivery Dairies Around Boston

-By Steve Saleeba, CBS Boston

Back when I was a kid, every Wednesday, mom would serve my sisters and me each a plate of sunny side eggs that she had just plucked out of the chicken coop in the backyard. To wash it all down, I'd get a glass of farm-fresh ice cold milk that the local dairy had just dropped off earlier that morning. I know what most of you are thinking: "Man, you are old." While that may be true, the real truth is, to this day, there are still a handful of local dairies that do home delivery.

Home delivery is typically a bit more expensive than the supermarket, and normally comes with a delivery fee, but the difference in taste may just be worth it. In honor of June being National Dairy Month, I put together a list of some local dairies that deliver around Boston. So order up and drink up.

Thatcher Farm Dairy

Milton, MA 02186
(617) 696-6000
Website

Thatcher Farm in Milton has been family-owned and operated business since 1891. Their milk makes a short trip from a family farm in North Haverhill, New Hampshire. From there, the dairy delivers the farm-fresh, glass-bottled milk to just about every community in the Boston-metro area. While Downtown Boston and Back Bay are listed on their home delivery route, the folks at Thatcher Dairy told CBS Boston that they do make a lot of business deliveries to that area, so residents interested in home deliveries can give them a call and they'll try to work something out.

Crescent Ridge Dairy

Sharon, MA 02067
(800) 660-2740
website

Crescent Ridge in Sharon has been owned by the same family since 1932. Their milk comes from cows at a family farm in Fairfield, Vermont. They also use the good old-fashioned glass bottles. Crescent Ridge delivers to dozens of communities to the North, South, East, and West of Boston. And while they do offer home delivery for a handful of Boston neighborhoods, sadly, Downtown Boston & Back Bay are not on that list.

Maple Farm Dairy

Mendon, MA 01756
(508) 478-6455
website

Maple Farm Dairy in Mendon is another family-owned dairy that has been around more than 75 years. Glass bottles: check. Fresh milk from local cows: check. They cover the I-495 area South and West of Boston. Maple Farm Dairy comes highly recommended by our WBZ-TV Senior News Producer, who is a long-standing customer. When you call - ask about our special offers for first time customers.

A.B. Munroe Dairy

East Providence, RI 02914
(401) 438-4450
website

A.B. Munroe Dairy was founded in 1881. The current owners say the business has been in the same family now since 1936. Munroe, which is based in Rhode Island, gets its milk from a farm that's just over the Connecticut border. They distribute their glass bottles full of delicious farm-fresh milk to much of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Shaw Farm Dairy

Dracut, MA 01826
(978) 957-0031
website

Shaw Farm Dairy in Dracut began delivering milk to Merrimack Valley homes by horse and wagon back in 1908. Six generations later, the farm continues to deliver (but with trucks) on its promise of super fresh dairy products. The milk comes from cows that Shaw farm raises on the family land in Dracut and a few plots they lease in southern New Hampshire.

Hornstra's Farm Dairy

Hingham, MA 02043
(781) 749-1222
website

Four generations ago in 1912, Hornstra's Farm Dairy in Hingham opened up shop. Their milk comes from a family farm in North Haverhill, New Hampshire. It shows up on your doorstep in those lovely glass bottles. (In case you haven't picked up on the trend yet, many people think milk from the glass bottles tastes better.) Their home delivery area covers much of the South Shore. Wait, what's that? A free sample?

Puleo's Dairy

Salem, MA 01970
(978) 744-MILK

website

Puleo's Dairy in Salem delivers to Salem and surrounding towns. The dairy was founded as an ice cream shop but grew into a full-fledged dairy in the 1940s. All of their milk comes from cows raised in Massachusetts. As a matter of convenience to customers, the offer options for either glass or plastic bottles.
