Golf Partners Brady, Manning Win Private Match At Pebble Beach
BOSTON (CBS) -- For much of the early part of the 2000s, the story of Tom Brady's career was rooted largely in his triumphs over Peyton Manning and the Colts. Yet now, years later, Manning has a Super Bowl victory of his own and is on the Broncos, and the two best quarterbacks in the game for the last decade-plus have come to form a bit of a mutual appreciation society.
And they've also formed a golf partnership.
Sports Illustrated's Monday Morning Quarterback noted on Wednesday that Brady and Manning played together in a "very private round of golf" this summer before their training camps began. The duo went up against two businessmen named Ed and Sam, who probably were not two of the best businessmen who ever lived.
Yet Sam and Ed led after 16 holes, before Brady -- as he typically does -- excelled in the clutch. In the best ball format, Brady capped the birdie on 17, and then Manning finished off the birdie on 18. (Here in Boston, we'll assume Brady was the one whose fairway iron stuck the ball mere feet from the pin, with Manning simply tapping in for the bird.)
Their friendship is something Brady values greatly, he told King.
"We're pretty good friends. I like that. It's important to me," Brady told King earlier this month. "Peyton has two brothers he's really close to; I don't have a brother. We're competitors on the field, but there's no reason we can't be good friends off it."
Manning told SI's Peter King, "Both of us felt like it was one of our biggest victories."
Well, the two will match up against each other in Week 12 at Gillette Stadium, they won't be helping each other out, and there will likely be a bit more on the line.
