Gloucester fisherman dies in mishap

Police say a longtime Gloucester fisherman has died after diving beneath the herring boat he was working on to clear a snagged trawl net.

Police tell The Gloucester Daily Times that 51-year-old Duane "Charlie" Rine donned proper diving gear to dive beneath the 164-foot Western Venture late Tuesday in Georges Bank about 150 miles from shore. Police say Rine was a certified diver who volunteered for the task.

He became unresponsive when he surfaced.
