8-Year-Old Girl Gets Prosthetic Leg From Marathon Bombing Survivor
SOMERSET, Mass. (CBS/AP) — An 8-year-old girl who lost a leg in a lawnmower accident has received a special prosthesis designed to help her run and play soccer.
Kori Tickel of Somerset, Massachusetts, is the second recipient to benefit from a foundation set up by Boston Marathon bombing survivor Heather Abbott.
Abbott lost a leg in the 2013 attacks at the marathon finish line. She has since established the Heather Abbott Foundation, which donates artificial limbs to help amputees enjoy full and active lives.
Kori, who was 2 when her leg was severed by a lawnmower, was fitted Saturday with a prosthesis specially designed to help children participate in high-impact activities.
Abbott's organization teamed up with the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Össur Boston Running and Mobility Clinic to provide the limb.
At a Boston event on Saturday, Abbott said Kori was running on her new leg for the first time. The crowd applauded the youngster, who stood by Abbott's side during her announcement.
"She's doing terrific so if you see her, give her a high-five," Abbott said before giving Kori a hug.
