Girl Nearly Drowns In Pool At West Yarmouth Motel
WEST YARMOUTH (CBS) - An off-duty nurse saved an 8-year-old girl who nearly drowned in a pool at a West Yarmouth motel on Sunday.
The girl from Ashland was not breathing and had no pulse when she was pulled from the bottom of the pool at the Town and Country Motor Lodge on Route 28 around 10 a.m.
Cardiac nurse Keri Kiefer of Worcester, who stopped by the motel to ask for directions, stepped into action.
"She was completely lifeless. Her eyes were open. They were glazed," said Keifer.
"There was no pulse. There was no movement."
WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports.
Kiefer estimated she gave the girl 25-30 chest compressions, and after the third round of CPR, the girl started blinking and had a pulse.
"It was very scary to see a girl laid out like that," said Cory Benoit, Kiefer's boyfriend.
"There was absolutely no life. I mean, it was almost like she flipped a switch."
The girl was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition.
Police say a review of the scene found the pool water to be "crystal clear" and all fencing and gates to be in "perfect working conditions."
