Gillette moving razor manufacturing from South Boston to Andover
ANDOVER – P&G Gillette announced Tuesday it is transitioning its razor manufacturing facility from South Boston to Andover, moving hundreds of jobs to the area.
The company said it is expanding its 150-acre Andover campus to make it "more sustainable, agile and efficient with some of the best equipment and capabilities in the world."
The new facility will create products for razors, aerosol and chemistry lines. Packaging operations and direct-to-consumer operations will also take place in Andover.
Gillette will also create a Global Headquarters and Technical Innovation Center in South Boston, aimed to be "more modern, dynamic and collaborative." There will be about 750 employees at that facility, which will be "on or near" the current South Boston campus.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey posted about the announcement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
According to the company, the transition will take place over an extended period of time with the first employees moving to Andover in 2-3 years.
"This is a critical moment for our business to ensure that we have the right infrastructure and capabilities to win for the next century," Gary Coombe, CEO of P&G Grooming, said in a statement. "I'm confident that we've reached the right conclusion and I'm glad that we will continue to have a meaningful presence in both communities – including Boston, which has been our home for over a century and offers so much in terms innovation, talent, education, and culture. This will undoubtedly be an advantage for us in the future."
