Measuring only .44 square kilometers, this city has a population of less than 1000, including the Pope himself. Even though it is small and sparsely populated, more than five million people made their way to Vatican City back in 2013. These travelers visited the city in the hopes of seeing the historic sites and experiencing the religious aspects of the city.
Also referred to as the Holy See, Vatican City is the seat for the Catholic religion and has been the home of the Pope since 1378. This city is home to many historical sites, informative tours and much more. From Rome you can take the bus system to get to Vatican City. There are several different bus lines that will take you to the city, and each one offers a different itinerary and stops along the way. Rome's Metro will also take you close to Vatican City, where you can walk the remaining 10 minutes it will take to get to the city. Taxis are also available for travel between Rome and Vatican City.
Those who enjoy walking and want to see the sites along the way can easily walk from Rome to the Vatican. It will be a long walk, but it is possible to walk there and back. If walking, make sure to take the Ponte Sant' Angelo, which is the bridge that will take you directly to the Castel Sant' Angelo. Many visitors make their way to Vatican City by means of a horse-drawn carriage. This is another great way to see the streets and surrounding areas.

When you enter Vatican City you will go through St. Peter's Square, where you will see St. Peter's Basilica. The Vatican Museums are a must-see when visiting Vatican City. To get the most out of the visit to the Vatican Museums, it is highly recommended that you take one of the many tours, including the ones that end at the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms.
Other must-see things within Vatican City include Castel Sant' Angelo, Tomb of St. Peter, St. Peter's Dome, Sacred Grottoes and the Vatican Gardens. Also, if you are there during the Pope's Audience day, Wednesdays, make sure to see him as he makes his public appearances at St. Peter's Square.

As with just about anywhere else in the world, tourism slows down in Vatican City during the winter months. Starting in late November through the end of February you will find that there are not a lot of travelers making their way to the Vatican. So, if you don't want the heavy crowds and do not mind the cold weather, these months are perfect for visiting. During this time, prices are also less expensive than during the summer months.
When trying to decide what day of the week to visit the city, keep in mind that the museums are closed on Sundays, with the exception of the last Sunday of the month. On the last Sunday of the month, museums are open in the morning and offer free admission, which means this day is generally very crowded. Fridays seem to be the best day to visit Vatican City, especially in the summer when museums are open at night (with reservations).
