'A Transformational Death': March From Milton To Mattapan Marks First Anniversary Of George Floyd's Death
BOSTON (CBS) – Rallies were held in Massachusetts and in cities across the country Tuesday in memory of George Floyd, who was killed by police in Minneapolis one year ago. Among the events was the March for George and Justice rally, which started in Milton.
The event began when a crowd gathered at Parkway Methodist Church on Blue Hills Parkway in Milton.
Protesters marched 1.2 miles from Milton to Mattapan carrying signs and walking in solidarity to Walker Park where they held a rally.
"We know that George Floyd was a watershed moment, a transformational death in actually U.S. history," said former Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson.
When the group arrived at Walker Park, they took a knee for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, signifying how long former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin had his knee on Floyd's neck.
"I think we have made a lot of progress, and that is good. But there definitely is a lot more that needs to happen. This shouldn't be the end of the road," said 14-year-old Giselle Dimache.
A variety of groups participated in the event. Among them was Dunk the Vote.
"There have been many George Floyd's out there. They just haven't been brought to light, because they may not have been taped," said Ron Bell from Dunk the Vote.
The fate of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which passed the House in March, is now in the hands of the Senate
