Mass. Gas Prices Rise As Driving Season Approaches
BOSTON (CBS) - It was nice while it lasted. Wondering why gas prices are creeping past the $2.00 mark? This week, the average cost of a gallon of self-serve regular reached its highest level of the year in Massachusetts.
This time, we can't blame it on supply. Inventories of crude oil and gasoline have hit historic highs. Instead, experts say we can blame it on spring. Just as we approach the high-demand driving season, suppliers have to switch to a government-mandated eco-friendly blend of gas.
"Now we're starting to see the changeover to the summer fuel blends, which add a premium to the price of fuel, which is why we're starting to see some of the prices going up." said John Paul, of AAA Southern New England.
Analysts predict prices will continue to rise into summer months before leveling off, barring any unpredictable influences. They say it's worthwhile to shop around. A survey by AAA this week showed a 30 cent difference between the highest and lowest prices in New England.
