Gary DiSarcina Named Red Sox Bench Coach
BOSTON (CBS) -- With Torey LoVullo off to manage the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Red Sox had an opening at bench coach. The vacancy has been filled, as former major leaguer and Mass. native Gary DiSarcina will be the team's newest bench coach, the team announced on Friday.
DiSarcina, 48, is a native of Malden, Mass. and has previously worked at various levels in the Red Sox organization. He managed the Lowell Spinners from 2007-09 and the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2013, winning three division titles in the process. He has coached in the major leagues since then, working for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as third base coach in 2014 and 2015 and as first base coach in 2016.
DiSarcina played all 12 seasons of his major league career, mostly as a shortstop, for the Angels organization. He was a career .258 hitter in 1,086 games, batting .307 and making the American League All-Star team in 1995. He was previously teammates with Red Sox manager John Farrell from 1993-94 and with hitting coach Chili Davis from 1989-90 and 1993-96.
This will be DiSarcina's first major league stint as a bench coach, but his extensive and various experience in professional baseball will certainly provide value to the Red Sox dugout. He also previously worked with the Red Sox as a baseball operations consultant in 2006 and as a minor league infield coordinator in 2010.
