Gammons On Toucher & Rich: Oakland Knocks Aceves Around At Fenway
The Red Sox game was called in the seventh inning due to weather, but the damage was so bad that the Sox probably would have been able to come back. They fell to the Oakland A's 13-0 after the Sox fell apart in the third giving up six runs.
Peter Gammons called in to 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich to discuss the poor outing by starter Alfredo Aceves, Daniel Bard being called up from Double-A Portland and Will Middlebrooks.
Alfredo Aceves made a handful of mistakes on top getting beat around on the mound. The starter was called for a pair of balks, failed to cover first base on a grounder, then added to that mistake with a wild throw that allowed Josh Reddick to reach second before eventually scoring.
This will most likely be Aceves' last start before John Lackey rejoins the rotation this weekend, but could the team just end up releasing him or sending him down with all the quality help in the bullpen?
Reports are that Daniel Bard will be called from Double-A Portland to take the place of knuckleballer Steven Wright. How difficult will it be for Bard to get back into it after the way things went for him last time he was with the big club.
Plus, the guys discussed the bat of Will Middlebrooks and his three-run homer on Monday night that snapped his slump. After posting good rookie season numbers last year what can we expect from the second year third baseman?
