Gammons on Felger & Mazz: 'I Just Sense Jon [Lester] Is So Unhappy Here'
BOSTON (CBS) -- Peter Gammons joined Tony Massoratti and Marc Bertrand today to discuss the status of the Red Sox, and he dropped an interesting tidbit regarding Jon Lester.
It's no secret that the 28-year-old is struggling this season, as evidenced by his 5-6 record and 4.49 ERA. But could the lefty want out of Boston? Gammons thinks that's possible.
"I just sense that Jon is so unhappy here that I'm sure it would be good for him," Gammons said regarding a potential trade of Lester. "The question is how would the team survive without the hope of having Jon Lester go out and win 10 games in the second half of the season?"
Earlier on Wednesday, Lester retweeted several angry messages from fans upset with his performance and the team's first half.
"A lot of u have some harsh things to say. No one is more disappointed w/ how the 1st half of the season went than us. That's why we [never quit]," he tweeted. "Get it all out now. And for those of you who remain positive and supportive, I can't tell you how much we appreciate it!"
Gammons said that if the Sox were looking to make a trade, Lester would bring back the greatest return among his fellow pitchers.
Gammons also discussed the rest of the season, the idea of shutting Carl Crawford down until next seasonand the Red Sox farm system and the youth movement nearing Fenway.
