Funeral Set For Whitinsville Soldier Killed In Afghanistan
WHITINSVILLE (CBS) – Funeral arrangements have been announced for a Whitinsville soldier killed in action in Afghanistan.
Cpl. John Dawson was killed April 9 by small arms fire in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Dawson was a combat medic for the 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team in the 101st Airborne Division air assault unit.
A wake for Dawson is scheduled for Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 4-5 p.m. at Carr Funeral Home in Whitinsville.
Parking will be allowed in the UniBank parking lot on Cottage Street and the Whitin Community Center. There will also be overflow parking with shuttle buses as Northbridge Middle School, Whitinsville Christian School, Northbridge High School and the parking lot across from the Northbridge Fire Station.
Dawson's funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Upton, with a burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Whitinsville.
Anyone wishing to attend Dawson's funeral is asked to proceed directly to the church, including veterans groups and organizations.
Residents are invited to line the procession route on Church Street and Linwood Ave. from Memorial Square to Pine Grove Cemetery to pay their respects to Dawson.
Traffic delays are expected on Monday as a result of the funeral. The procession route will be closed to traffic from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and from 1-3 p.m.
