Frigid Weekend Ahead, But Weather Likely To Cooperate On Halloween

BOSTON (CBS) – There have been a lot more tricks than treats recently during Halloween time in New England.

In 2011, it was "Snowtober"…the region was buried in a freak, early season, heavy snowfall.  In 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck with a fury just two days before Halloween, prompting many communities to postpone trick or treating for the second time in two years.

Last year, a well-deserved break, a few sprinkles but otherwise terrific weather for the kids with temperatures topping 60 degrees. This year, Halloween falls amidst a very topsy-turvy weather week.

First, a temperature surge!  Milder air will begin to flood the region on Tuesday, and by Wednesday  many towns will top 70 degrees, likely one of the last times we will hit 70 for a very long time.

Then, a temperature plunge! Sharply colder air will arrive later this week. Highs will only be in the 50s Thursday and Friday for Halloween.

Finally, that 4-letter word is back... S-N-O-W. More on that in a bit.

HALLOWEEN FORECAST

Partial sunshine is expected on Friday, but a digging storm system to our west will likely throw more clouds our way late in the day. By evening, expect partly to mostly cloudy conditions, dry and cool.

Temperatures will drop off from their afternoon highs in the mid 50s to the lower 50s around 5pm.

Expect some upper 40s between 6-8pm in the suburbs, but very little wind. All in all, not too shabby considering our recent streak of turbulent times in late October.

FIRST FLAKES POSSIBLE

Then comes the trick - a potent storm system comes charging at New England straight from the upper reaches of Canada this weekend. It will literally drag the coldest air of the season down from the polar regions and deliver a December-like weekend for us.

Temperatures will struggle to top 40 degrees both Saturday and Sunday in Boston. Many of the suburbs, especially north and west of the city, will remain in the 30s all weekend. Almost seems cold enough for snow right?  Well funny you should ask.

While we are likely to miss the brunt of the storm, there will likely be some rain and snow showers here on Saturday.

It is a bit early yet for a snow accumulation map (5 days away), but with such a strong push of cold air coming in, someone is bound to get some decent snow accumulation, somewhere in New England!

A FRIGID WEEKEND

Snow or no snow, it will be one very cold, windy weekend.

And don't forget to turn your clocks back Saturday night, one final reminder (as if you needed it) that winter is right around the corner.

Imagine this, when the Patriots take the field at Gillette Stadium this Sunday versus the Broncos, the sun will be setting, just after 4:30 pm. Yikes.
