Framingham Firefighter Recovering After Hit & Run Crash
FRAMINGHAM (CBS) - A Framingham firefighter is fighting for his life after a hit and run crash.
Joseph Keefe, a 26-year veteran, was out riding his motorcycle when a van pulled out in front of him and then took off. The driver later turned himself in, but police say he was drunk.
"I can't believe it could happen to such a nice guy," said Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Pillarella.
Authorities say 55-year-old Peter Fucci cut him off causing the two to collide.
"First disbelief, and then my heart just sank once I started learning about the extent of the accident," said Pillarella.
Police say he was wearing his helmet but the impact caused multiple injuries. His family says he was communicating by squeezing his hand.
"He's in serious condition. He's stable though. And right now they've got him in a medically induced coma," said Pillarella.
Police say after the crash, Fucci left the scene but later returned. That's when police arrested him charging him with drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving to endanger.
Pillarella says he's known Keefe since they entered the academy and prays he'll one day return.
"All around great guy," said Pillarella. "He'd do anything for anybody. He's helped quite a few people in this community."
Fucci posted bail after his arrest and may be facing other charges in the future.
