Former NBA Player From Cambridge Going To Federal Prison
DES MOINES, Iowa (CBS) -- A hero of Cambridge, who had street named in his honor, will now be spending the next 6 and half years in federal prison.
Rumeal Robinson, the former Cambridge Rindge and Latin School basketball star who played at Michigan and later in the NBA is going to jail after being convicted in federal court of bank fraud related charges.
In court documents, prosecutors said that among his schemes, Robinson received a $377,000 from an Iowa bank in 2004.
He claimed in loan documents that the money would be "short-term working capital'' for his business, but prosecutors say Robinson and his girlfriend spent the money on a condominium with plasma televisions and high-end furniture.
According to authorities, Robinson also arranged for the sale of his mother's Cambridge home in January 2006 for $1 million without her knowledge, and invested most of the money in an energy company in which he and another man were involved.
