Football Round-Up: Harvard Stunned By Lehigh
Not a good afternoon for the Crimson. Holy Cross had their problems as well as both were stunned in Saturday football action.
Lehigh 21 Harvard 19
Chris Lum threw for two of Lehigh's three touchdowns -- all of which came in the third quarter -- as the Mountain Hawks rallied to beat Harvard 21-19 on Saturday.
Lehigh (4-2) trailed 17-0 in the third quarter and outgained the Crimson 197-56 in the stanza.
The Mountain Hawks got on the board on a 4-yard pass from Michael Colvin to Ryan Spadola with 9:04 left in the third.
Lum then hit Mark Wickware for a 1-yard TD with 2:36 left in the third, and Lehigh finished the impressive quarter with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Lum to Spadola with 4 seconds remaining.
Spadola finished with a school-record-tying 14 catches for 206 yards. Lum had a career-high 299 yards on 21-for-38 passing, as 303 of the Mountain Hawks' 328 offensive yards came in the air.
Gordon finished with 118 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for the Crimson (3-2).
Dartmouth 27 Holy Cross 19
Foley Schmidt kicked two fourth-quarter field goals and Pat Scorah returned an interception for the clinching touchdown as Dartmouth defeated Holy Cross 27-19 Saturday.
Schmidt's 35- and 32-yard field goals gave the Big Green (3-2) their first lead of the game, 20-19, and Scorah's 43-yard interception return with 48 seconds left sealed the win.
Holy Cross (3-4) led 16-7 early in the second quarter after Ryan Taggart threw 8-yard touchdown passes to Freddie Santana and Gerald Mistretta and Rob Dornfried kicked a 30-yard field goal
Dartmouth pulled within two, 16-14, on Connor Kempe's 1-yard touchdown run, but the Crusaders answered with a 20-yard field goal by Dornfried.
Nick Schwieger rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries for Dartmouth. Taggart completed 25 of 39 passes for 220 yards for Holy Cross, but threw four interceptions.
Richmond 11 Massachusetts 10
Pressed into action with Richmond's top three quarterbacks missing the game because of injuries, true freshman Montel White threw a game-winning touchdown pass with 9 seconds left to beat Massachusetts 11-10 on Saturday.
White drove the Spiders (3-3, 1-2 Colonial Athletic Association) 60 yards in eight plays, ending with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tre Gray. White completed 4 of 5 passes for 47 yards on the drive. His only other pass was incomplete.
Caleb Violette's 25-yard field goal with 1:51 left gave the Minutemen (4-2, 2-1) a 10-5 lead.
A first-quarter safety put Richmond ahead 2-0, but Massachusetts took a 7-2 lead after a 7-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Havens to Andrew Krevis in the second quarter.
Havens fumbled on a third-quarter sack, leading to a 33-yard Will Kamin field goal.
Linebacker Mike Mele had a career-high 14 tackles for Massachusetts.
New Hampshire 28 James Madison 14
R.J. Toman threw for 248 yards and the go-ahead touchdown as New Hampshire rallied to defeat James Madison 28-14 on Saturday.
The Wildcats (4-3, 2-2 Colonial Athletic Association), who won back-to-back games for the first time this season, trailed 14-10 at halftime.
New Hampshire then scored 18 unanswered points, starting with a 25-yard field goal by Mike McArthur with 12:17 left in the third quarter. After Toman capped an eight-play, 64-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Fox, the two-point conversion was good.
Dontra Peters completed the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run with 6:25 to go.
Scott Noble rushed 19 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Dukes, scoring on two 2-yard runs.
James Madison (4-2, 1-2) has lost two of its last three games after starting the season 3-0, including a 21-16 win over then-No. 13 Virginia Tech.
Brown 17 Princeton 13
Joe Springer threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Fay for the go-ahead score with 7:39 left as Brown defeated Princeton 17-13 on Saturday.
The Bears (3-2, 2-0 Ivy League) scored all their points in the second half after the Tigers (1-4, 0-1) took a 13-0 first-half lead but lost quarterback Tommy Wornham with an upper-body injury.
Wornham, whose 1-yard run put the Tigers up 7-0, was hit hard later in the first quarter and left the game for good after Princeton's next possession.
Patrick Jacob kicked field goals of 37 and 42 yards for Princeton. Andrew Dixon got most of the work at quarterback for the Tigers, finishing 7-for-18 for 83 yards.
Mark Kachmer's 2-yard third-quarter run gave Brown its first touchdown. Alexan Norocea added a 38-yard field goal with 2:21 left.
Tronti Zachary carried 19 times for 86 yards and Kachmer 17 times for 61 yards for Brown.
Delaware 24 Rhode Island 17
Andrew Pierce ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns for Delaware in a 24-17 win over Rhode Island in Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday.
The Fightin' Blue Hens (7-0, 4-0) grabbed the lead after a 15-yard touchdown run from Pierce on their first possession of the game and a 27-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Paul Worrilow on the ensuing Rhode Island drive.
Mike Perry kicked a 29-yard field early in the second quarter to extend Delaware's lead to 17-0.
The Rams (2-4, 1-2) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Steve Probst and a 75-yard kickoff return by Travis Hurd before the end of the second quarter to cut Delaware's lead at halftime to 24-14.
The only points of the second half came on a 36-yard field goal by Rhode Island kicker Louis Feinstein.
The 7-0 start by Delaware is the school's best since its 2003 Division I-AA national championship season.
