Hurricane Arthur Brings Heavy Rain To Cape Cod, South Coast

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – Tropical downpours from Hurricane Arthur caused major problems in Massachusetts on Friday.

The South Coast and Cape Cod were hit the hardest.

A Flash Flood Emergency was in effect in the New Bedford and Fairhaven areas due to "serious and life threatening" rain totals.

More than eight inches of rain fell in New Bedford Friday afternoon. More than five inches fell in Fairhaven.

Storm drains could not keep up with the downpours and several roads were flooded.

Public safety officials urged people in that area to not drive through flooded roadways.

"It makes no sense at all for anyone to be out in their vehicle," said Peter Judge of MEMA. "People can put their selves in serious harm's way if they continue to do so."

Some vehicles managed to race through the flooded roads, but others got stuck and had to be towed away.

A Flash Flood Warning was in effect for Cape Cod and the South Shore until midnight.

Hurricane Arthur also affected ferry service to and from Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. All travel was shut down Friday night. Shelters were set up on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard to house the hundreds of travelers who missed the last ferry back.
