Massive Fire In New Bedford Stretches Resources

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) - A massive fire in New Bedford kept firefighters busy overnight.

They were already dealing with damage from a thunderstorm that hit the South Coast when they got the fire call.

The call stretched staff to the limit.

"(We) had three other incidents going on in the city at the same time, so our resources were a little stretched. We also had heavy rains and weather down here," said Fire Chief Michael Gomes.

The fire started in a home at South Second and Grinnell Streets and quickly spread to two adjoining homes.

"A total of six families have been displaced by this fire, Gomes told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe.

Fire officials think the blaze was started by accident. Two of the homes suffered significant damage. Two firefighters were treated at a local hospital for heat exhaustion.
