Additionally, gusty winds are to follow its passage.

Temperatures will be falling into the upper 30s north to the middle 40s southeast.

With the sunshine, temperatures will be nearly steady in the lower to middle 40s this afternoon.

The coldest air of the season is on the way!

Watch Melissa Mack's forecast:

An arctic front really 'slaps us in the face' on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Highs will only be in the 20-25F degree range.

There will be plentiful sunshine to accompany these bitter cold temperatures.

There is only one 'fly in the ointment'. A cold pocket of air in the upper levels of the atmosphere (trough) has a chance of producing a few flurries during the latter half of the day.

Look at the cold chunk of arctic air.

Temperatures will moderate late this week and the the first full weekend of 2012.

Sneak Peek:

Both long-range models, the GFSx and the EURO, are showing signs of a potential coastal storm Tuesday of next week.

Could this be a snowstorm that snowlovers have been waiting so patiently for?

We will be watching this closely as new model runs become available.

Happy New Year!

Melissa :)
