PD: Rockland Man Burned While Torching Adult Store In Weymouth

WEYMOUTH (CBS) - A Rockland man charged with setting fire to an "Amazing" adult store in Weymouth is in the hospital with serious burns, police said.

The fire broke out around 6:40 a.m. in the building that also houses a nail salon, a kitchen counter supplier and several apartments. Firefighters from several communities responded to help battle the intense flames.

When officers and firefighters arrived at the scene, a witness reported seeing a man start the fire and directed officers to the suspect who was running south on Bridge Street.

Police caught up with that man, identified as 44-year-old Jon Fernald.

Officers reported that Fernald suffered severe burns. He was taken to South Shore Hospital and later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Fernald is under arrest in the hospital and is charged with arson of a dwelling.

Four people escaped safely from the apartments.

There have not been any reports of any injuries.

The area around Bridge Street was closed for several hours, forcing the Fore River Bridge to close and backing up traffic.

The fire remains under investigation.
