Gilmore Bridge Reopens After Fire Fueled By Vegetable Oil
BOSTON (CBS) - The Gilmore Bridge reopened Friday afternoon after a fire underneath the bridge. The fire started around 11:30 a.m.
At one point, flames and smoke could be seen from several miles away.
WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports.
Investigators were on scene Friday afternoon. They say the fire may have been caused by an NSTAR switch gear located under the bridge and was actually fueled by vegetable oil that's used as a coolant inside the wires.
Traffic was diverted around the bridge for more than two hours while inspectors examined it for any possible structural damage. The road reopened just after 2 p.m.
Commuter Rail service, which runs under the bridge, had to be shut down in both directions while firefighters knocked down the flames.
